Twitter out of control
Juli 24, 2008
After having come home from work, relaxed, watched Obama’s speech in Berlin, done some Poker and chatted with friends – I started to check again my „beloved“ WebApps. But what I saw in Twitter really surprised me if not to say it shocked. It seems to be that I am a little bit famous – but in a worrying way…
In fact, it is simply strange that people I don’t even know mention my name and talk about my Tweet. Such a simple banal Tweet: „That’s true. but Internet needs to be faster and more consistent. Web apps are not yet 100% trustworthy“
Another contact told me that they discuss about it on a friend-feed. So I checked and I saw my Tweet with another one’s signature. How strange is that????? The owner of the account had told quite immediately the community that it was not his own tweet – but anyways… a discussion had started about what might have happened in BeTwittered…
I had expected a lot from WebApplications – or no, the other way round, I had never expected a lot from them – system crashes, deleted follower and following lists, etc etc – But not that my own tweet is signed by another one’s name.. this is freaky and questions the whole sense of these kind of applications. How can one be sure that the Tweet, post, upload etc is from the person the account belongs to? What about reliability and also credibility?
The only interesting thing is – that almost 20 people seemed to like the post plus mrontemp wrote about the whole issue. I am sure this was just, because in their perception „louisgray“ twittered it. If it had been me – who would have cared
So finally I’m ending up with a few hours of fame in the www and in being sure that WebApps are definitely NOT consistent!

As the author of BeTwittered, I’m going to look into this as much as I can manage. It would concern me if a message was somehow altered in transit to appear to be from someone who did not author it. I will say, for what it’s worth, the BeTwittered server does not store any personal information at all (besides the normal web traffic logs)
Anyone who has any concerns or information about this issue that could help out, please contact me directly at robert@arlesnet.com.
(FYI – I’ve „cross-posted“ this message over at mrontemps comment thread linked above)
Thanks
